87 awarded best screenplay

on MAY 11th, "87" and it´s writer/director CSABA BENE PERLENBERG won BEST SCREENPLAY at the SCANISH FILM DAYS in MALMÖ. as such, it was the first film ever to receive the newly established award. the award was decided by the MALMÖ SCREENWRITING GROUP.

the following is the motivation for the award, as given by the group:
"With literary elements, the screenplay gives a sharp idea that concern and captures the reader in to the story. It is not just letters on a sheet of paper. The fact that the author feel strongly about his vision penetrates through both the script and the finished film. Slowly, a multi-layered image develops that questions matters of life and death, human reactions and relationships.

With a perspective that sometimes excludes important storytelling components, the film proper risks with its audience. The film is thus a brave film, without a beginning and end that does not seem to want to dictate the audience's interpretation. We are given room room to think on our own, but at the same time, we remain inside the story until the end.

This we see as a sign of an excellent ability to succeed in telling a story with a high standard as well as a story which is organic, that both surprises and shows that it has something special on its mind.

SHORT SYNOPSIS
What defines us as the persons we think we are? When does inaction become a reaction? There are as many answers as there are people. And this film is one of them - about the moment that is as unkind to us, as we were to it.

THE DIRECTOR'S COMMENT
The most interesting thing about drama is that which cannot be explained in words; those unimaginable moments where everything we thought we knew, changes so abruptly. I wanted to do a film that relied not upon poignant lines or on a classic narrative, but on a basic scenario, on subtleties and on a basic, eery tone. I truly believe that less is more, and also that, in combination with small hints, I as a director have the right to ask of my audience to create the story with me. The greatest stories are the ones we ourselves fill in the blanks to - the greatest visuals are the ones that we are forced to create in our minds. Nothing is as terrifying or provoking as what we cannot see.

I hope that this film will give the audience an opportunity to pause, and reflect, upon that which is most important in their own lives (and why) and in doing so, being able to move forward.

THE METHOD
While Perlenberg's previous film "The Walk" (Swedish title "Väsenpumpen") consisted of a single, improvised shot lasting for 59 minutes, the directors new short consists of two shots. The majority of the film consists of a one-take, scripted, moving master shot, which involves both an interior and exterior location. The complicated shooting took the crew 8 takes to get it right. The scenery consisted of an eloborate lighting scheme, where lighting was set up from outside-in as well as inside. An entire house was sound rigged for the one take method. While the shooting started out with a glide-cam, it ended up being shot hand-held due to the cramped nature of the house.

ABOUT ACTOR IA GUSTAFSSON
After spending several years in the U.S. and New York City, Ia Gustafsson returned to her native Sweden and her home town of Malmö, only to quickly become involved in several Swedish independent film productions. Her production credits include roles in "Demonicum" (2007, Peang film), the starring role in the indie-feature "Kvartersbutiken" (by Yadi Behrad), "Mjölk/Cigaretter" (2006, Dijalekt Film) and the feature film "Doxa" (2005, Triangelfilm).

Her education includes an actors certificate from The Bonney Studio, a Meisner Plus Program© in New York City (1999-2001), Acting for film & television - Sam De Fazio at New York University (1999), The Actor´s Center, Dangerous Acting - David Pratt, London (1999), and Balettakademien, Musical & theatre, Gothenburg (1988-1991).

ABOUT DIRECTOR CSABA BENE PERLENBERG
Csaba Bene Perlenberg is one of Sweden's most prolific and interesting new young filmmakers. Having been the first director to be awarded the New Nordic Voices Award for his film "The Walk" at the 2007 Nordic Panorama Film Festival ("a one-take, one-shot masterpiece", the festival called it), 2007 became his break-out year. Having directed some 15 short films, the majority being fiction, his cinematic artisanship has always involved itself with experimentation of the medium itself. Improvisation has been one of his signature methods.

Today, he is associated with hepp film and the producer Helena Danielsson in southern Sweden, but he is also running his own film production company together with another young Swedish director, Magnus Göransson. Together they form Anton Bene Film, which is a part of Korphult Kompani AB. He has studied at PCFE Film School in Prague (film production), New York Film Academy (screenwriting), Brobygrafiska Folkhögskolan (screenwriting) in Sunne as well as studied film history and film science at Lunds University. He is currently a guest faculty member at Campeon Frigymnasium in Helsingborg, Sweden.
